Australian Gastroenterology Week (AGW) was recently held from the 28th – 31st August in Perth, Western Australia, to great success and excellent attendance.
AGW is one of the most significant scientific meetings in the Asia Pacific region, featuring the latest advances in clinical management, cutting-edge translational and basic science, and original research in endoscopy, gastroenterology and hepatology. Since the inaugural meeting, AGW has grown in attendance from 25 to over 2,000 medical practitioners in the 2026 edition; including surgeons, researchers, nurses and allied health professionals from across the Asia Pacific region.
The theme for the 2026 meeting, “AGW 2026: Integrate, Innovate & Collaborate”, reflects the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA)s’ commitment to support cross disciplinary integration of knowledge – through their work in education, credentialing, research funding, professional networks and national advocacy, alongside coordinating AGW.
As Australia’s peak professional body for gastroenterology and hepatology, GESA supports excellence in clinical practice, drives research and innovation, develops future specialists, influences health policy, and advocates for better patient care.
The scientific program brought together a range of clinicians, scientists, educators and industry partners to explore how innovation — in therapeutics, devices, diagnostics and models of care — can be translated into meaningful improvements in patient outcomes. Featuring international speakers ranging from Hong Kong to California, and over 100 national speakers from across Australia.
The highlights from AGW 2026 include:
- The Live Endoscopy sessions, offering practical, real-world insights into advanced endoscopic techniques
- The joint sessions with Gastroenterological Nurses College of Australia (GENCA). These sessions included important insights into the latest guidelines in the nursing management of IBD, portal hypertension and MAFLD.
- Symposium Sessions: exclusive presentations for AGW 2026; including “AI in Endoscopy: Hype, Help or Harm?”, “Beyond the Data: The Psychology of Decision-Making in IBD Care”, “ Treating to Target in Ulcerative Colitis: From Principle to Practice” and more.
