Professor Nick Talley Reviews Seminal Contributions by Mayo Clinic

Professor Nick Talley, AC, MD, PhD, reviews the Seminal Contributions by Mayo Clinic in the Field of Neurogastroenterology in a recent interview.
He discusses his editorial coauthored with Dr. Michael Camilleri, which appears in the September 2025 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings as part of the ongoing series commemorating 100 years of continuous publication by the journal.
In the article, Prof. Talley spotlights a few of the many leading experts in the field of Neurogastroenterology who trained at Mayo Clinic and their seminal work published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings and elsewhere.
He includes Dr. Charles F. Code, who is recognized as the father of gastrointestinal motility. Others mentioned include Drs John Pemberton, a colorectal surgeon, Joseph H. Szurszewski, who discovered the migrating motor complex in the small intestine, Juan-R. Melagelada, who performed early studies on the role of H2-blockers in gastric secretion, and Alan F. Hoffman, who discovered the importance of bile acid, to name a few.
